A touching story of a simple man caught up in the terror of 1971 Bangladesh.
‘Nona Pani- Barren Waters’ is a story of people who do not have a tale worth telling—at least by themselves. Affected by the impact of climate change such as Cyclone Aila, the trauma of internal migration and dislocation, change of profession, silent cries for self-identity, and the film tells the story of some rural but universal characters. They have a life to live but no command of their own destiny. Romba, Doshpai, and Krishna represent life in the small village of Botkhali, near the Sundarbans, Southwestern Bangladesh. The narrative is non-linear in structure. Like netting the eggs of shrimps from the river, the film also collates numbers of fractions of their lives. The film tries to collect the inner and external split of the personality of the protagonists without drawing any conclusion. The performance of Jatra in the film gives the film a ‘film within a film’ characteristic.
Set in 16th century Eastern Bengal, the film is inspired by the life of Chandrabati, Bengal`s first feminist poet. The story follows her falling in love with another poet, Jayananda, who later leaves her for another woman. The betrayal pushes Chandrabati to renounce marriage, confine herself inside a Shiva temple and start rewriting the Ramayana - an act which eventually led to her becoming a historic figure.
This story is about a tea community’s mundane life where old chieftain Padmoluv , awaits his death and often reminisces the past controlled by colonial masters. School drop-out Chandan wants to elude the exploitation. However, young worker Sojoy, feels trapped but continues the grind. Every plant in the garden is a mute witness to the unsaid stories of their lives. In death, struggle and escape, these characters become archetype of entrapped tea garden worker in Bangladesh.
