1840 - Max Miller and a troupe of artistes come to perform at a tavern, which is not licensed for such performances. A rival tavern informs the police and they have to pay a heavy fine. However, they find the money by rescuing a boy and getting the reward.

The husband becomes a singer in a nightclub, and is soon targeted by a predatory socialite. They start an affair, the wife finds out about it and decides to leave her husband, until matters are smoothed over by a third-party who wishes the couple well.

Max Miller plays a boxer's manager who fails to get fights for his simple-minded boxer. The manager sets up a scene in an American nightclub whereby his fighter gets the chance to knock down the reigning champion. The ruse fails to get the fighter a job but a female acquaintance of the champion takes a fancy to his opponent. The plot develops aboard a ship back to England.

Gypsy dancer Hassina falls in love with lion tamer Brazil and travels to London to find him. Brazil is supposedly working at the Crystal Palace, but he is not there when Hassina arrives. After fainting from lack of food, Hassina is taken into the home of wealthy middle-aged bachelor Alan Brooks, who falls in love with her.

An amateur detective tracks down a gang of diamond thieves to Chinatown.
