Die kleine Hexe Kiki verlässt gemäß der uralten Hexentradition ihre Familie und Freunde, um in einer fremden Stadt ihre Hexenkräfte zu vervollkommnen. Zusammen mit ihrem schwarzen Kater Jiji findet sie durch einen glücklichen Zufall bei einer Bäckerfamilie Unterkunft und entwickelt den Wunsch, selbst einen Betrieb zu eröffnen: Einen Lieferservice, den sie mit ihrer Flugfähigkeit betreiben will. Nach kleineren Startschwierigkeiten bekommt Kiki einige Aufträge und ihr Lieferservice entwickelt sich bald zu einem florierenden Unternehmen. Allerdings machen Kiki die Einsamkeit in der Großstadt und die Tatsache, dass sie anders ist als andere Kinder, zunehmend Probleme. Ihr kleiner Lieferservice und ihre neu gewonnenen Freunde helfen ihr jedoch, auch die schwierigsten Lebenssituationen zu meistern.

Paterson arbeitet als Busfahrer in einer Kleinstadt, die genauso heißt wie er selbst: Paterson im US-Bundesstaat New Jersey. Anschließend kehrt er nach Hause zurück, zu seiner künstlerisch ambitionierten Frau Laura, die im Gegensatz zu ihm immer wieder neue Projekte startet – vom Muffin-Backen über E-Gitarre-Spielen bis hin zum Umdekorieren des Hauses, in dem überall ihr schwarz-weißes Lieblingsmuster zu finden ist…

Sie sind eine glückliche Familie, die Schillers in Einbeck im Hannoverschen. Vater, Mutter und 9 Kinder bevölkern das alte, spitzgiebelige Fachwerkhaus am Marktplatz, und der ehrbare Familienvorstand hat mit seinem großen Namensvetter nichts weiter gemeinsam als dem Vornamen Friedrich. Seines Zeichens ist Friedrich Schiller ein gutsituierter Bäcker- und Konditormeister, dem eine Berufung in den Vorstand der Handwerkskammer ersehntes Ziel und Erfüllung aller bürgerlichen Wünsche ist. Alle 9 Kinder sind, wie man sagt, gut geraten und bereiten den Eltern Freude. So könnte im Hause Schiller alles in Sonnenschein getaucht sein, wenn nicht auf Vater Friedrich der Alptraum eines schlechten Gewissens lasten würde. Kurz vor seiner Silberhochzeit schliddert er doch beinahe unfreiwillig in ein kleines Abenteuer mit einer munteren Dame, namens Lollo, das zwar mit einem Mordsrausch, aber völlig harmlos endet.
