داستان فیلم روایت‌گر زندگی چند خانواده است که برای گذراندن تعطیلات به شمال کشور سفر کرده‌اند. دوستان احمد (شهاب حسینی) که پس از سال‌ها زندگی در آلمان به ایران بازگشته، در تلاش هستند تا همسری را برای او بیابند. به همین خاطر، یک معلّم مهدکودک به نام «اِلی» (ترانه علیدوستی) با دعوت سپیده (گلشیفته فراهانی)، به همراه دیگران به این سفر آمده‌است. امّا پس از ناپدید شدن الی در ساحل دریا، ماجرا به یک تراژدی تبدیل می‌شود و هر کس در مورد این مسأله به قضاوت پرداخته و دیگری را مقصر می‌داند. تا آن‌جا که جمع به خاطر منافع خود زمانیکه نامزد جستجوگر الی در پی او از راه می‌رسد از حمایت الی دست کشیده و سپیده را مجاب می‌نمایند که تصویری منفی از الی ارائه دهد.

داستان این فیلم که به ادعای سازندگان آن بر مبنای رویدادی واقعی ساخته شده، اوت ۱۹۸۶ (مرداد ۱۳۶۵) در دهکده ای کوچک در جنوب غربی ایران روی میدهد. زنی به نام زهرا (شهره آغداشلو) پیش یک خبرنگار فرانسوی که خودرو او هنگام عبور از روستا خراب شده می آید و برای او داستانی هولناک درباره خواهرزاده خود ثریا و از اتفاقی مرگبار که روی داده میگوید...

رعنا و عماد زن و شوهری جوان هستند که در حال اجرای تئاتری بر اساس نمایشنامه مرگ فروشنده نوشته آرتور میلر می‌باشند. آنها به علت نشست زمین مجبور می‌شوند به اجبار خانه خود را ترک کنند و به اصرار یکی از دوستانشان بنام بابک به خانه‌ای اسباب‌کشی می‌کنند که پیش‌تر زنی بدنام بنام «آهو» در آن ساکن بوده است. ابتدا همه چیز خوب پیش می‌رود ولی وقایع بعدی به بحرانی غیرقابل کنترل ختم می‌شود...

نزدیک عید است و همه مردم مشغول خانه تکانی و استقبال از سال نو هستند. دختر جوانی به نام روح‌انگیز(ترانه علیدوستی) که خود را آماده ازدواج می‌کند، روز چهارشنبه سوری برای کار به خانه خانواده‌ای متوسط وارد می‌شود. فضای پر تنش و غم‌انگیز خانه، به همراه غوغای انفجار ترقه‌های چهارشنبه سوری فضایی بی‌ثبات و ناآرام به وجود آورده‌است. مژده (هدیه تهرانی)، خانم خانه، در هیئتی سراپا سیاه و با حرکاتی عصبی، حالتی غریب دارد. مژده به رابطه همسر خود (حمید فرخ‌نژاد) و زن همسایه (پانته آ بهرام) مشکوک شده و زندگی خانواده در آستانه نابودی است. دست آخر مرد، به ظاهر در نظر همسرش تبرئه می‌شود و پیش از عید آشتی می‌کنند؛ هرچند تنهایی و دوری آدم‌های قصه ادامه خواهد داشت.

Hezar-Dastan was an Iranian epic historical drama television series from 1987, developed and directed by Ali Hatami. Hezar Dastan is considered one of the most important and most influential works of art in the history of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting. The production of the show took almost 8 years, starting in 1979 and ending in 1987, during which Hatami established a large set to represent Tehran in both Qajar dynasty and World War II, retroactively creating Iran's first movie studio and backlot (named Ghazali Cinema Town).
