Etelänavalla, jokseenkin Australian puoleisella kulmalla Terre Adeliella, elää pingviineistä suurin ja kaunein. Keisaripingviini (Aptenobrytes forsteri) kasvaa metrin mittaiseksi ja saattaa painaa 40 kiloa. Keisaripingviinit vaeltavat kalaisan meren ääreltä jopa 200 km matkan jäisille, myrskyjen pyyhkimille ylängöille. Jäätiköllä ei kasva mitään. Pingviinit kurtiseeraavat kunnes löytävät parin. Emo munii kookkaan munan ja palaa nääntyneenä mereen syödäkseen itsensä kuntoon. Isäpingviini hautoo munaa jalkojensa välissä. Ylängöllä ei ole mitään, mistä voisi rakentaa pesän. Ainoa suoja on isän oma keho. Äitipingviini palaa ylängölle poikasten kuoriutuessa - jos luoja suo. Kun poikaset ovat kasvaneet tarpeeksi suuriksi koko heimo matkaa meren ääreen ja elämän kiertokulku alkaa alusta.
