Le 29 septembre 1979, l'Agence d'exploration interstellaire lance une fusée japonaise, le JX-1 Hawk, dans l'espace lors d'un voyage de neuf mois pour étudier sur la planète Saturne. Une fois cette sortie terminée, l'équipage se voit confier une nouvelle mission spatiale après que les scientifiques ont découvert une étoile, nommée « Gorath » l'Union astronomique internationale, dont le mouvement devient incohérent. En analysant la trajectoire de Gorath à travers le système solaire, l'équipage du JX-1 Hawk découvre qu'elle est certes plus petite que la Terre, mais 6 000 fois plus dense. Il parvient à transmettre ses données vers la Terre avant qu'un énorme puits gravitationnel ne se forme et l'absorbe avec le vaisseau.

Le gouvernement de ce qui était alors l’empire britannique décida de planter l’Union Jack sur le Pôle Sud. Il envoya une expédition d’hommes, de poneys, de chiens et de motoneiges primitives tirant des traîneaux à partir d’une base située sur la Côte antarctique. Le chef de l'expédition, Robert Falcon Scott, et ses hommes quittèrent la ville de Lyttelton, en Nouvelle-Zélande, sur le navire Terra Nova en direction de l'océan Austral et ses banquises.

L'expédition en Antarctique du commandant Cousteau à bord de la Calypso a été la plus passionnante mais aussi la plus périlleuse de toutes les aventures du grand baroudeur des mers. Un de ses hommes, Michel Laval, y a en effet trouvé la mort. Malgré tous les moyens extrêmement sophistiqués mis à la disposition de l'équipage, la Calypso restait bien fragile dans l'immensité de la banquise. The Last Place on Earth is a 1985 Central Television seven part serial, written by Trevor Griffiths based on the book Scott and Amundsen by Roland Huntford. The book is an exploration of the expeditions of Captain Robert F. Scott and his Norwegian rival in polar exploration, Roald Amundsen in their attempts to reach the South Pole. The series ran for seven episodes and starred a wide range of UK and Norwegian character actors as well as featuring some famous names, such as Max von Sydow, Richard Wilson, Sylvester McCoy and Pat Roach. It also featured performances early in their careers by Bill Nighy and Hugh Grant. Subsequently Huntford's book was republished under the same name. The book put forth the point of view that Amundsen's success in reaching the South Pole was abetted by much superior planning, whereas errors by Scott ultimately resulted in the death of him and his companions.
