Rei Kiriyama a 17 ans et est un joueur de shogi (échecs japonais). Il a fait ses débuts en tant que joueur professionnel quand il était au collège. Il vit seul à Tokyo depuis que ses parents et sa jeune sœur sont morts dans un accident de la route quand il était petit. Un jour, Rei Kiriyama rencontre trois sœurs qui sont ses voisines. Les trois sœurs sont Akari, Hinata et Momo Kawamoto. C'est sa première rencontre avec quelqu'un en dehors du monde du shogi depuis de nombreuses années. Les repas avec la famille Kawamoto lui apportent de la chaleur humaine. Alors que Rei continue sa carrière dans le shogi, les interactions avec ses voisins lui permettent de grandir comme joueur de shogi et comme personne.
