Rei Kiriyama a 17 ans et est un joueur de shogi (échecs japonais). Il a fait ses débuts en tant que joueur professionnel quand il était au collège. Il vit seul à Tokyo depuis que ses parents et sa jeune sœur sont morts dans un accident de la route quand il était petit. Un jour, Rei Kiriyama rencontre trois sœurs qui sont ses voisines. Les trois sœurs sont Akari, Hinata et Momo Kawamoto. C'est sa première rencontre avec quelqu'un en dehors du monde du shogi depuis de nombreuses années. Les repas avec la famille Kawamoto lui apportent de la chaleur humaine. Alors que Rei continue sa carrière dans le shogi, les interactions avec ses voisins lui permettent de grandir comme joueur de shogi et comme personne.

Satoshi Murayama, le maître du shogi (échecs japonais) connu comme le grand rival de Yoshiharu Habu, le génie du shogi du siècle, est décédé d'une maladie incurable à l'âge de 29 ans. Satoshi a consacré sa vie à combattre non seulement la maladie mais aussi ses rivaux , poursuivant fébrilement le titre le plus élevé, au péril de sa vie. Le réalisateur Yoshitaka Mori (Hyakuhachi (2008), Space Brothers (2012)) dépeint la vraie vie difficile de Murayama, pleine d'amour de ses parents et de son professeur, d'après le roman de non-fiction écrit par Yoshio Osaki. Kenichi Matsuyama dépeint intensément Satoshi et incarne physiquement le personnage.

Rei is a 17-year old professional shōgi player, who lives by himself, not having a real family, and has scarcely any friends. Among his acquaintances is a family, which consists of a young woman, Akari, and two young girls, Hinata and Momo, and who also keep a numerous number of cats.

The story is about a teenage boy who happens to be a shougi master. One day, a nine-year-old girl turns up at his house, requesting to be taken as his disciple. From there, all kinds of wacky hijinks ensue.

Kotaro Fuda, a young lawyer running his late father's law firm, meets Tatsumi Tendo, a shogi player with the uncanny ability to predict trial outcomes. Despite Tatsumi's lack of legal experience, Kotaro hires him as a trial lawyer, setting the stage for an unconventional partnership.

Newspaper journalist Shunsuke Akiba is transferred to the cultural desk and put in charge of shogi. He meets Nobushige Sanada, a 33-year-old aiming to be a professional shogi player by achieving the rank of 4-dan or more. Sanada is over the age limit as he could not achieve 4-dan by the age of 26, and is now trying to take an exam for admission to 3-dan. Akiba supports Sanada's attempt to become a professional shogi player and becomes interested in the game.

A love story between a 24-year-old office worker who has neither love experience nor communication skills and a 32-year-old female shōgi player he meets on his daily commute.
