Alors qu’ils s’installent dans une ville minière de l’Ouest Australien, John et Nancy croisent la route d’un chien errant surnommé Red Dog, qui les adopte aussitôt. Leur nouveau compagnon se comporte de façon surprenante et réussit à conquérir le cœur de chacun des ouvriers qui y travaillent.
