מותחן אימה מסתורי של גרגורי הובליט (בחירתו של הארט). ג'ון הובס (דנזל וושינגטון, "ג'ון קיו"), בלש משטרתי, משוכנע כי ברגע שיוציאו להורג את הרוצח הסדרתי אדגר ריס (אליאס קוטיאס, "קראש"), צרותיו יבואו אל קיצן. אך כאשר אנשים ברחוב, ואף חברים קרובים של הובס, מתחילים לזמזם את אותו שיר שריס זמזמם בתא הנידונים למוות, הוא מתחיל לחקור. הוא מגלה שמאחורי כל העניין עומדת קללה של המלאך הרשע "עזאזל", שקולל לחיות על הארץ ללא צורה גשמית, ומשתלט על גופם של אנשים. לאחר שהובס הורג איש שרוחו של "עזאזל" השתלטה עליו, הוא מוצא עצמו בורח מן החוק. כעת הובס חייב להוכיח את חפותו, ולנסות ולעצור את המלאך הרשע מלפגוע בעוד אנשים.

כמו בשני הסרטים הקודמים, גם הפעם העלילה מתמקדת ב"ארט הליצן" שבסרט החדש משחק את סנטה קלאוס למען תושבי וילדי מחוז מיילס, והרעיון שלו לחגוג את שמחת החג כוללת באופן מפתיע – רצח, מהומה ובעיקר הרבה דם.

בלש שחזר מהגיהינום חובר אל שוטרת כדי לחקור את המוות של אחותה. והם מוצאים עולם של מלאכים ושדים מהגיהינום.

במה שיכול להיתפס כמשל קומי, צמד מלאכים ( דיימון ואפלק), תקועים הרחק בגלות ויסקונסין, בגין עברה עתיקת יומין. ומשתעשעים להפוך את כל הסדר הקוסמולוגי על פיו, בתנאי שחבורת בני אנוש מוזרה לא תצליח לתפוס אותם קודם. המלאכים שמנסים לברוח מהמקום שכוח האל (!!!) מגלים דרך מקורית לחזור לגן העדן: הם יהיו חייבים לעבור מתחת לקשת של כנסייה מאוד מסוימת בניו ג'רזי. הבעיה הקטנטונת בתוכנית: הצלחתם תשמיד את קיום האנושות.

סיפורם של דיאגו מונטאז, לוחם שוורים שפרש בשיא הקריירה שלו, ומריה קרדנל, עורכת דין פלילית שאוהבת להרוג ברגעי השיא של עשיית אהבה. מריה הינה מעריצה גדולה של דיאגו ומחקה את שיטות לוחמת השוורים שלו ברציחות המסתוריות שלה. ליחסים בין השניים נקלע, בעל כורחו, תלמידו הצעיר של דיאגו, אנגל (אנטוניו בנדרס), ההופך לחשוד המרכזי של המשטרה ברציחות, זאת לאחר שהודה באונס שביצע בשכנתו.

למלאכים החיים לא קלים. סת' (קייג') מרחף בין בני האדם, ומתחיל לקנא בהם. הוא רוצה לגעת, לטעום, להריח, ובמיוחד לאהוב את מגי (ריאן). מגי היא מנתחת מצליחה המתמודדת עם המוות מדי יום, ולא בקלות היא מצליחה להתאהב בסת' שהגיע מהמוות. קסיאל (בראואר) הוא מלאך תומך שמזהיר את סת' מהחזרה לעולם החיים, ומסינג'ר (פרנץ), על ערש דוואי, רואה את סת' המלאך. אהבה בלתי אפשרית כשהשמיים הם הגבול.

קליירי פריי, נערה בת חמש-עשרה אשר יצאה לבלות במועדון לילה בניו יורק, אך היא לא חשבה שהיא תהיה עדה לרצח שבוצע ע"י שלושה בני נוער מקועקעים שרק היא יכולה לראות אותם. זהו המפגש הראשון של קליירי עם בני הנפילים הידועים גם כציידי הצללים; כת לוחמים סודית שנשבעה להגן על האנושות מפני השדים החיים בקרבה. ביחד עם חברה הטוב סיימון ועם לוחם הצללים יפה התואר ג'ייס, קליירי עומדת לגלות שרחובות ניו יורק מלאים במכשפים, פיות, ערפדים ואנשי זאב אשר החיים בדו-קיום עם בני האדם. גם אמה של קליירי הייתה מעורבת פעם בעולם הצללים. על קליירי לפענח את סודות עברה או שאותו אחד שחטף את אמה, עלול לחטוף גם את קליירי.

בלילות, ג'וני הופך לגוסט ריידר - צייד שדים שכפוף למרות השטן. בעודו נאבק בקללה שהטיל עליו השליח של השטן, נחלץ גוסט ריידר לעזרתו של ילד קטן הנמצא בסכנה גדולה. האם יצליח להציל אותו מידיו של השטן? האם יוכל להסיר מעליו את הקללה שרודפת אותו?

לאחר אסון נורא שיורד על האנושות, קבוצה של זרים הנקלעים לדיינר שכוח אל במרכז ארה"ב הופכים בלי ידיעתם לקו ההגנה האחרון של האנושות כשהם מגלים שהמלצרית הצעירה של הדיינר נושאת ברחמה את המשיח. לעזרתם נחלץ בן בריתם המלאך מייקל שהגיע כדי להגן על המשיח, תקוותם האחרונה של המין האנושי.

בלש משטרה חוקר את האמת מאחורי מות שותפו. המקרה המסתורי חושף שחיתות משטרתית מטרידה וסוד מסוכן שבו מעורבת אישה צעירה.

נחוש בדעתו לחיות "חיים לא רגילים", רוברט (איאן מק'גרגור), שרת במקצועו, חוטף את סלין (קמרון דיאז), בעלת הון נרקסיסטית, כדי לקבל בעבורה כופר שמן. לרוע מזלו של רוברט, סלין דווקא מאמצת לחיקה את חיי השבי ונהנית לראות את ניסיונותיו להשיג את הכסף. לא נשכח גם את שני המלאכים (דלרוי לינדו והולי האנטר) המנסים לגרום לשניים להתאהב.

כל חייו ג'ורג' ביילי ויתר על החלומות הגדולים שלו, לטובת העיר שלו, בדפורד פולס. אך הלילה, בערב חג המולד, הוא שבור ורוצה להתאבד עקב העובדה שהוא איבד שמונת אלפים דולרים. קלארנס, המלאך השומר של ג'ורג', יורד לכדור הארץ כדי לשכנע את ג'ורג' לא להתאבד, ומראה לו איך החיים היו נראים אם הוא לא היה קיים. ג'ורג' היה כל כך חשוב לכל כך הרבה אנשים. האם באמת כדאי לזרוק הכל לפח?

ווסלי דוייל, סוכן אפ.בי.איי המוביל את החיפוש אחר רוצח ידוע לשמצה הקורא לעצמו "ידי אלוהים" בטקסס, הופך חשדן באופן טבעי, כאשר אדם נכנס אל משרדו ומכריז שזהותו של הרוצח הסידרתי החמקמק ידועה לו. האדם מזדהה כפנטון מייקס, וטוען שאחיו אדם, הוא זה שרצח את כל אותם האנשים ואחר כך נטל את חייו. אך פשעיו של אדם הם רק חלק קטן מסיפור ארוך ומורכב שמייקס רוצה לחלוק עם דוייל כדי שזה יבין את מניעיו של אחיו להרוג. עבר והווה מתמזגים כאשר שני הזרים נוהגים אל גן הוורדים בו אדם קבור ומייקס מספר סיפור על אמונה וגילוי עצמי.

נחשב לאחד מסרטיו הטובים ביותר של צ'אפלין, "הנער" הפך גם את ג'קי קוגן לכוכב, כאשר הוא מגלם ילד קטן המאומץ ע"י הקבצן לאחר שהוא ננטש ע"י אימו, עדנה (עדנה פורביאנס). מאוחר יותר, עדנה מתחרטת על נטישתה. כאשר היא מוצאת אותו, היא עוקרת אותו מהקבצן, סצינה אשר הפכה לאחת המרגשות ביותר שנכללו אי פעם בקומדיה.

טוטו, יתום תמים, מצטרף לקבצני עירו ומוביל אותם למאבק נגד פרנסי מילנו. תסריטו של זאואטיני (עפ"י רומן פרי עטו) מעלה פנטסיה קסומה, המוחה נגד התנאים הסוציאליים, באיטליה של הימים הראשונים שלאחר המלחמה. הפנטזיה הסוציאליסטית של אשף הנאו-ריאליזם האיטלקי, ויטוריו דה-סיקה (גונבי האופנים, אומברטו ד.), שבה בן המעמד הנמוך מייצר נסים עבור רעיו קשי היום, ומאפשר להם ולצופים השבורים של איטליה הפוסט-מלחמתית לנסוק למחוזות של חלום. בניגוד לסרטי נאו-ריאליזם איטלקי אחרים שנעשו באותה תקופה, הושקעו מאמצים ניכרים באפקטים המיוחדים בסרט, ולצורך כך אף נשכר מומחה אפקטים אמריקאי. כמו כן דה סיקה השתמש גם בשחקנים מקצועיים, דבר שלא היה מקובל בקולנוע הנאו-ריאליזם המוקדם יותר. הסרט עלה לאקרנים באיטליה ב-8 בפברואר 1951, ובאפריל 1951 השתתף בפסטיבל קאן. הביקורת הרעיפה עליו תשבחות רבות, והוא אף זכה בפרס דקל הזהב.
