Film je inspiriran memoarima svećenika Gabrielea Amortha - “Egzorcist govori” i “Novi izvještaji jednog egzorcista” koji su brzo postali međunarodni bestseleri. Amorth je rođen 1925. godine u Modeni, zaređen je 1954., a u 61. godini života postaje egzorcist Rimske biskupije. Godine 1990. osniva Međunarodno udruženje egzorcista i predsjeda do 2000. Nakon toga, posvetio se gore navedenim memorarima koji su poslužili kao inspiracija za ovaj nadnaravni horor triler.

Katolički svećenik Merrin nekad je živio u Nizozemskoj, gdje je svjedočio užasu 2. svjetskog rata. Nakon proživljene trauma, napustila ga je vjera te se više ne može iskreno nazivati božjim čovjekom. Traume želi zaboraviti i odluči otputovati u Kairo, a zatim na poziv kolekcionara rijetkih starina pridružuje se britanskom arheološkom timu na udaljenoj lokaciji u predjelu Turkana u Keniji. Merrin prihvaća ponudu da za tajanstvenog kolekcionara u novootkrivenoj crkvi, koja je začuđujuće dobro sačuvana, potraži malu skulpturu i to po mogućnosti prije nego što je pronađu Britanci. Uskoro otkriva da su Britanci pronašli crkvu tamo gdje crkve ne bi trebalo biti jer je sagrađena u 5. stoljeću kada kršćanstvo još nije došlo u te krajeve. Merrinu se pridružuje mladi svećenik Francis pun misionarskih ideala. Međutim, ispod crkve spava drevno zlo i čeka da ga netko probudi. Ludilo zahvaća okupljene oko iskopine i Merrin ponovno svjedoči zločinima za koje je molio da ih nikada više ne vidi.

Demonski Gospodar tame daje nalog svom podaniku, goblinu Blixu, da ubije preostale konje jednoroge, nositelje svjetla i čistoće, kako bi zavladala vječna tama, a on apsolutni vladar svijeta. Istodobno, šumski dječak Jack povede svoju djevojku, ljupku princezu Lily, duboko u šumu kako bi joj pokazao nešto što nikad nije vidjela: par prekrasnih bijelih konja jednoroga. Lily je toliko zadivljena ljepotom plemenitih stvorenja da ih poželi dotaknuti, iako ju Jack upozorava da smrtna bića ne smiju dotaknuti te svete životinje. Lily svojim prekrasnim glasom zapjeva pjesmu kojim privuče jednog od jednoroga, a kad on dođe do nje, ona ga pomiluje. No to iskoristi Blix, koji je sa svojim pomagačem sakriven u zasjedi, i pogodi jednoroga otrovnom strelicom. Jednorozi se daju u bijeg, a Blix i pomoćnik ih slijede i naposljetku sustignu. Blix odreže čarobni rog umirućoj životinji i u tom trenutku zavladaju mrak i zima.
