Njegovo otkriće odvest će ga u potragu za Rickom Deckardom, bivšim istrebljivačem koji je nestao prije trideset godina…
Tvrtka Tyrell koja proizvodi replikante suočena je s problemom. Roboti koji se ni u čemu ne razlikuju od ljudi, "samo" nemaju emocija, pobunili su se i njih nekoliko se vraća na Zemlju. Tamo ih čekaju posebni policajci, "istrebljivači" osposobljeni za njihovu likvidaciju. Tvrtka je čak iz mirovine pozvala u pomoć najboljeg od njih, Deckarda.
Prije trideset godina izvanzemaljci su uspostavili kontakt sa Zemljom. Ljudska je rasa očekivala bespoštedni napad ili enormni tehnološki napredak. Ništa se od toga nije dogodilo. Ustvari, izvanzemaljci su bili izbjeglice, posljednji preživjeli sa svoje planete. Bića su smještena u District 9 Južne Afrike jer se zemlje svijeta nisu mogle dogovoriti što će s njima. Izvanzemaljci su postali problem i svi pomalo gube živce.
21. je stoljeće. Nove znanstvene metode prokreacije jamče genetski savršenu djecu, a roditelji nostalgični za starim "metodama" začeća riskiraju mnoge anomalije svoje djece. Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke) rođen je takvim, inferiornim načinom, i zarana mu je s velikom sigurnošću dijagnosticirana srčana mana.
