La storia Jack Aubrey, un capitano il cui amato vascello, la 'Surprise', viene improvvisamente attaccato da una nave nemica. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, il convoglio britannico della marina capitanato da Ericson, supererà le più incredibili intemperie a bordo della nave Compass Rose.

La vicenda, ispirata a un fatto storico, si svolge nel 1797, ai tempi delle guerre napoleoniche. I marinai della nave da guerra inglese H.M.S. Defiant organizzano un ammutinamento, stanchi delle vessazioni subite da parte di alcuni ufficiali. Conquistato il controllo della nave, vengono però in contatto con la flotta francese e a quel punto il senso di patriottismo prende il sopravvento e, con un atto eroico, i ribelli ingaggiano il combattimento, riuscendo a sconfiggere i nemici.
