Alfred Chamberlain era un fotografo di successo, ma ora è squattrinato perchè ha iniziato a eliminare gente dalle sue foto. Soffre inoltre dell'incapacità di appassionarsi a qualcosa. Ma poi Alfred conosce Patsy Newqvist, che decide di presendersi la responsabilità di trasformarlo in "un uomo forte, vitale e sicuro di sé".
