Bernd Trautmann, nato a Brema nel 1923, è catturato dagli inglesi nella Seconda guerra mondiale. Durante un incontro di calcio tra prigionieri, le qualità di portiere di Bernd vengono notate da Jack Friar, il manager di una squadra amatoriale. Forzato a unirsi al team, Trautmann sorprende presto tutti sia dentro che fuori dal campo.
