冬の間は豪雪で閉鎖されるホテルの管理人職を得た小説家志望のジャック・トランスは、妻のウェンディーと心霊能力のある息子ダニーとともにホテルへやってくる。そのホテルでは、かつて精神に異常をきたした管理人が家族を惨殺するという事件が起きており、当初は何も気にしていなかったジャックも、次第に邪悪な意思に飲みこまれていく。

移動サーカスのオートバイスタント芸人だった17歳のジョニー・ブレイズは、肺癌が全身に転移して死に瀕した父親を治すことを条件に、悪魔：メフィストと契約を結んだ。しかし父親は健康な体になった直後に事故死。悲嘆にくれるジョニーは、サーカスも恋人のロクサーヌも捨てて旅に出る。それから13年が過ぎ、不死身のバイクスタントとして名声を得ていたジョニーは、ケーブルテレビのレポーターとなったロクサーヌと再会する。

容姿は冴えないが天才的なセンスをもつ無名のミュージシャンであるウィンスロー・リーチは、誰の後ろ盾もなく自分の曲を懸命に売り込もうとしていた。その最中に無名で駆け出しの女性歌手フェニックスの才能を見出し、ともにその将来を夢見る。だが間を置かず、大手レコード会社「デス・レコード」社長のスワンに曲を奪われ、美しい彼女は身体を奪われかけ、自身は無実の罪で投獄される。獄中でスワンが自分の作品に醜悪なアレンジを施し、大々的に売り出そうとすることを知ったウィンスローは激怒し、脱獄してレコード会社に乱入するが、警官に制止された際、誤ってプレス機に頭を挟まれ、顔と声が潰れてしまう。

カフェ「ザ・プレイス」に居座る謎の男。人生の迷い人たちが絶えず訪れ、彼に願いを訴える。男は、願いを叶える代わりに彼らに任務を与えるが、それらはどれも他人の運命を巻き込むものだった。やがて、彼に願いを訴えた者たちの運命が交差し始め…。
