タリバン政権下、争いによって荒廃したカブールの町で、11歳のパヴァーナは、家族と小さな部屋に暮らしてい る。足の悪い父は、アフガニスタンの歴史を美しい伝説になぞらえて話してくれていた。ある日突然父親がタリバ ンに連行され、家族の暮らしは一変する。タリバンは女性のみの外出を禁じているため、残された者だけではお金を稼ぐことも、食料を買いに行くこともできない。家族のために、パヴァーナは髪を切り少年になりすまし町に出 て、父親を救いだす方法を探そうと決意する。
