Zone V-2

Zone V-2 1989

1

Zone V-2, an exurb near a bustling city, serves as a microcosm of society with unique laws and relationships. Its diverse inhabitants, including the common man, a VCR-aspiring guild, a young engineer yearning to work abroad, and a hidden brothel operating as a tapestry workshop, engage in seemingly benign interactions that conceal contemporary societal issues. This satirical portrayal critiques vulgarity and well-meaning intentions. The exurb strives to become a model community, led by former manager Videlov. Strict rules govern life in the Zone. When Rangelov shelters a roe deer, tensions rise. Meanwhile, Bonev suspects his wife due to the presence of twenty-lev notes, discovering his daughter's involvement in paid dancing. To protect the deer, Rangelov hides it with the restaurant keeper, leading to intense Commission meetings to resolve the issue.

Anna (Marianna Dimitrova) and her husband Ivan (Plamen Sirakov) move to the capital of Sofia in search of advancement. He works the day shift in a factory, and she works at night in a textile mill. That arrangement allows one of them to always be home with the children. Much to Anna's chagrin, a fellow worker develops a passion for her and almost drives a wedge between herself and her husband. Meanwhile, the owner of the villa they now share needs to use it again, so the two have to find an apartment. Worse yet, Anna's mother dies unexpectedly. But at least her death takes them back home and gives them a chance to re-examine their values before city life shreds them completely.

This grim Bulgarian drama explores the effects that the postwar Stalinist-led social reorganization of that country had upon the lives not only of those who suffered public denunciation, but upon those who were coerced into going along with those denunciations against their will, and especially upon the children. In the story, the schoolgirl Alexandra's father was a celebrated partisan who fought against the Nazis in World War Two. His prominence must have been considered a threat, because at the beginning of this film, he denounced and arrested. Not only that, but Alexandra (Monika Budjonova) has her cherished Young Pioneer (communist youth league) membership stripped from her. Her teachers have been forced to publicly humiliate her for being the daughter of an enemy of the state, and her friends, except for the inexplicably loyal Ivan (Kliment Corbadziev) have had to abandon her.
