OJ 헤이우드의 아버지 오티스 헤이우드 시니어가 기이한 현상으로 인해 갑작스러운 죽음을 맞이하며 시작된다. 해명할 수 없는 의문의 상황으로 인해 아버지가 사망한 충격 소식을 듣고 헤이우드 목장으로 다시 돌아온 동생 에메랄드 헤이우드는 그의 오빠와 달리 주목받길 원하며 고독과 침묵을 견딜 수 없어 하는 모습들을 보인다. 어린 시절 할리우드에서 아역 스타로 유명세를 얻고 지금은 자신이 출연한 작품의 본인 캐릭터 이름을 딴 주피터 파크를 운영하는 리키 주프 박도 등장한다. 이들은 각자의 위치에서 아무도 볼 수 없는 ‘그것’에 대한 공포심을 느끼는 동시에 각자의 방법으로 그 정체를 쫓아간다.

우주 생물학자이자 교수인 ‘헬렌’은 의붓 아들 ‘제이콥’과 단 둘이 살아가던 중 갑자기 닥친 정부 기관의 사람들에게 이끌려 어딘가로 연행된다. 도착한 곳에서 그녀가 알게 된 사실은 바로 미확인 물체가 지구를 향해 돌진해 온다는 것. 이 물체가 지구와 충돌할 시, 지구는 한줌의 재처럼 우주에서 사라지게 된다. 남은 시간은 단 78분! 하지만 충돌할 것이라는 예상과 달리, 속력을 줄이고 센트럴 파크에 안착한 물체(스피어)의 출현에 정부는 혼란에 빠지고, 그 곳에서 걸어 나온 정체 불명의 외계 생명체에 세계의 이목이 집중된다. 인간과 동일한 모습의 외계인 ‘클라투’는 지구와 인류의 운명을 위해 세계 정상들과의 회담을 요청하지만, 그를 위험존재로 간주한 미국 정부는 그 요청을 거절한다. 그의 방문 목적을 캐내려는 정부 기관의 노력 속에 ‘헬렌’은 직감적으로 그를 구해야한다 생각하고, 그의 탈출을 돕는다. 탈출에 성공한 ‘클라투’와 ‘헬렌’, 그리고 ‘제이콥’은 정부의 추적을 피해 도망치기 시작한다. 그리고, 그 과정에서 ‘헬렌’은 ‘클라투’가 죽어가는 지구를 살리기 위해 인류를 향한 경고의 메시지를 전하러 왔다는 사실을 알게 되는데… 마침내, 그의 경고를 무시한 인류를 향해 무차별적인 공격이 시작되는데…

실직으로 인해 LA까지 흘러들어온 탄광노동자 멕은 일자리를 구하러 헤매다 공원에서 외계인의 침입과 지구의 멸망을 예언하는 신부를 만나게 된다. 그날 밤 무허가 판자촌에 숙소를 정한 멕은 낮에 만났던 신부가 TV에 나와 외계인들에 의해 발송되는 전파에 의해 인간들이 제압되고 있으며 곧 그들의 하수인으로 전락하고 말거라는 애기를 듣고 우연치고는 너무나 이상한 우연이라 생각한다. 그리고 곧 경찰에 의해 마을과 교회는 폐허가 된다. 멕은 폐허가 된 교회안에서 이상한 안경을 하나 발견하게 되는데, 안경을 쓰면 해골모습을 한 인간들이 보인다. 실은 LA의 인구의 반이상이 인간의 탈을 쓴 외계인에게 장악되어 있었던 것이었는데...

UFO가 지구에 접근하자 이를 발견한 관측소의 과학자들은 즉시 정부에 알린다. 워싱턴을 계속 하강하는 UFO와 전군에 내려진 비상 계엄령. 탱크를 비롯하여 중화기로 무장한 군대가 UFO의 도착 예정지를 향해 출동한다. 마침내 UFO는 워싱턴의 한 공원에 착륙하고 이를 포위한 군대는 발포 준비를 한다. 이때 UFO에서 한 남자가 걸어 나와 무장을 해제하고 그들에게 대화를 요구한다. 그러나 한 군인이 당황하여 총을 쏘고 부상을 당한 외계인은 자리에 쓰러진다. 이때 UFO에서 나와 무장군인들을 향해 광선을 발사하는 로봇 한순간에 탱크를 비롯한 무기들이 녹아 내리고 UFO를 둘러싸고 있던 군중들은 혼비백산하여 도망간다. 다시 로봇이 무기를 빼앗긴 군인들을 향해 광선을 발사하려 하려는 순간 이를 저지하는 외계인. 곧이어 앰블 런스가 달려오고 그는 군인병원으로 호송된다. 그날밤, 외계인은 백악관에서 찾아온 사람들에게 대통령과의 면담을 요청하지만 그뜻이 무시당하자, 외계인은 병원을 탈출하는데...

한 TV 제작자가 부패한 중미의 한 감옥에 갇힌 10명의 사형수들을 '매매'하여 수백만 명이 접속 관람하는 불법 리얼리티 인터넷 게임쇼에 투입한다. 게임의 내용은 이 사형수들이 1주일동안 무인도에서 최후의 1인이 남을 때까지 사투를 펼치는 것. 자신을 제외한 나머지 9명을 모두 죽여 살아남은 게임의 최후승자에게는 무기징역형으로 감형되어 사형을 면할 수 있는 기회가 주어진다. 미국 출신의 잭 콘라드를 포함하여 영국, 멕시코, 일본, 가나, 독일, 이탈리아 등 다양한 국가 출신의 사형수들은 헬기에서 바다로 투하되어 사투의 장소가 될 무인도로 향하는데...

카시 삼부작의 첫 작품. ‘코야니스카시’란 호피 족 인디언 말로 ‘균형 깨진 삶'라는 뜻이다. 뚜렷한 내러티브도 대사도 없이 그저 음악과 영상으로만 되어 있는 이 영화는, 고대 인디언들이 그린 벽화에서 시작한다. 이후 광활하고 경외로운 대자연, 그리고 인간이 약간의 가공을 가한, 노동하는 인간과 함께 하는 자연을 그린다. 이후 정신없이 빠른 속도로 굴러가는 도시를 묘사하는 씬으로 오면, 자연과 완전히 등을 진 채 오롯이 인간이 만든 인공적인 환경 속에서 속도와 파괴에 지배당하는 인간의 도시문명이 대비된다. 도시 문명의 속도는 점점 심해져 클라이막스에서는 거의 기하학적 무늬로 표현되며 현기증을 준다.
