1988-ųjų sausį žinomas Vokietijos prodiuseris Frankas Farianas (tuo metu beprotiškai populiarios grupės Boney M prodiuseris) į savo studiją Miunchene pasikvietė du vaikinus, trokštančius išgarsėti muzikos versle. Vietinis Robas Pilatusas ir paryžietis Fabrice‘as Morvanas gerai atrodė, puikiai šoko, bet jų balsai nebuvo ypatingi. Visgi prodiuserio tai nesustabdė. Aiškiai matydamas vaikinų potencialą, jis panaudojo schemą, kuri, kaip daug kas įtaria, buvo naudojama ir Boney M. atveju: vaikinai tiesiog žiopčiojo, o už juos dainavo profesionalūs atlikėjai. Naująją grupę pavadinęs „Milli Vanilli“, F. Farianas netrukus pasauliui pristatė pirmąjį vaikinų singlą – dainą „Girl You Know It‘s True“. Instinktai prodiuserio neapgavo: grupė žaibiškai išpopuliarėjo ne tik Vokietijoje, bet ir visoje Europoje bei Jungtinėse Valstijose. Vos po pusantrų metų „Milli Vanilli“ buvo apdovanoti prestižine „Grammy“ statulėle kaip geriausias metų debiutas.

MTV's Top Pop Group was a competition consisting of nine pop groups looking to be the next Top pop group. The show aired on MTV and was hosted by Mario Lopez. The judges were Brian Friedman, Michelle Williams and Taboo. Marianela Pereyra was the show's backstage correspondent. The casting special aired on August 28, 2008 the show premiered on September 11, 2008. Only 4 weeks after the premiere, the series finale was aired suddenly on October 2, 2008.
