Astronautas Markas Vatnis pasmerktas mirti Marse, kai kilus audrai žlunga jo misija. Likęs vienas ir praradęs visus ryšius su savo komanda ir žemės planeta jis panaudoja visas botanikos žinias, kad sukurtų aplinką, kurioje galėtų auginti maistą. Tuo pat metu jis ieško būdo sugrįžti namo. Tuo tarpu komanda žemėje vis dar tikisi, kad Markas gali būti gyvas, tačiau jei taip ir yra, kaip su juo susisiekti? O svarbiausia – ar jiems pavyks pargabenti jį namo iki tol, kol išsibaigs jo maisto atsargos?

Profesorius Johnas Robinsonas kartu su šeima lenda į Jupiterio II kosminį laivą misijai. Į kosminį laivą taip pat įlaipinamas daktaras Smithas, kurį siunčia priešo pajėgos sabotuoti misijos. Tai sukels incidentą, iš kurio erdvėlaivis be tikslo klaidžioja per galaktikas.

Netrukus tapsiantis tėvu mechanikas, skrenda kosminiu laivu į Naująją Žemę ir turi išvengti kosminį išpuolį, kurio metu erdvėlaivis yra naudojamas kaip ginklas.

Filmas pakylėja į nepaprastą erdvę – kosmosą už Saulės sistemos ribų. Čia kalinių įgulai suteikiama proga atpirkti savo nuodėmes – jie siunčiami misijai į juodąją skylę, esančią arčiausiai Žemės. Atsiskyrėlis Montė laikosi griežtos disciplinos, kad apsaugotų save ir kitus nuo aistros, tačiau ribota erdvė, iš kurios nėra pabėgimo, skatina smurtą, aistras ir sekso troškimą. Netrukus įgulos narė ima lauktis ir Montė tampa kūdikio tėvu. Laikui bėgant, įgulos gretos po truputį retėja, kol pagaliau erdvėlaivyje lieka tik Montė su vaiku.
