Het verhaal gaat over twee broers die het spel Zathura in de kelder van hun vaders huis vinden. Door het spel wordt het huis in de ruimte getransporteerd en de broers gaan op weg naar Zathura om het spel te beëindigen, maar er loert gevaar om elke hoek.
Als een oud kaartspel tot leven komt, reist een gezin terug in de tijd naar een middeleeuws dorpje waar ze weerwolven moeten ontmaskeren om veilig thuis te komen.
