In het 17e-eeuwse Japan is er een periode van vrede aangebroken. Veel clans raken daardoor ontbonden; samurai raken werkloos. Enkelen van hen dreigen met harakiri, ofwel rituele zelfmoord, in de hoop op een aalmoes.

Voordat hij beschermer werd, was Kenshin een angstaanjagende moordenaar die bekend stond als Battosai. Maar wanneer hij de vriendelijke Tomoe Yukishiro ontmoet, een mooie jonge vrouw die een enorme last in haar hart draagt, zal zijn leven voor altijd veranderen.

Kenshin Himura is een legendarische zwaardvechter. Hij is gestopt met het doden door middel van het zwaard. Hij probeert een vredig leven te leiden met Kaoru Kamiya die in het dorp een zwaardvechtersschool runt. Maar de zaken veranderen als het Akabeko restaurant, waar Kenshin Himura het liefst gaat eten, wordt verwoest. Kenshin Himura vindt daar een briefje waarop geschreven staat "Junchu".

Nadat Kenshin Himura op Shishio's slagschip overboord sprong om zijn minnares te redden, komt hij bij zijn herstel oog in oog met Seijuro. Seijuro heeft hem toen hij klein was leren vechten. Kenshin realiseert zich dat hij de schurkachtige Shishio niet kan verslaan en wil daarom dat zijn meester hem een ultieme techniek leert. Kenshin zal moeten leren hoe hij zijn innerlijke kracht kan ontgrendelen voor zijn eindstrijd met Shishio.

Kenshin Himura gaat de strijd aan met de kwaadaardige Makoto Shishio. Makoto Shishio werkte vroeger voor de Meiji-regering maar wil deze nu ten val brengen. Kenshin Himura pakt het zwaard dat hij zwoer nooit meer te trekken. Hiermee bepaalt hij het lot van het hele land.

1890. Ten tijde van het Meji-tijdperk in Japan hebben samoerai geen plek meer in de maatschappij omdat krijgers minder waardevol zijn geworden dan gewone boeren die aan ruilhandel doen.

Ten tijde van het Shogunaat in Japan komen dertien samoerai samen, onder leiding van Shimada Shinzaemon. Zij bereiden een zelfmoordmissie voor om de wrede landheer van de Akashi-clan te vermoorden. Hij heeft namelijk verkracht en gemoord, maar staat nu op het punt een hoge positie in het Rijk te krijgen.

In een pension in het negentiende-eeuwse Japan verblijven een aantal excentrieke karakters, waaronder de dief Sutekichi, op wie de pensionhouder Osugi verliefd is. Sutekichi is echter verliefd op Osugi's zus.

Ryunosuke is een gewelddadige samoerai zonder gevoelens, die moet doden om zich levend te voelen. Wanneer hij een zekere belangrijke wedstrijd moet vechten, vraagt de vrouw van zijn aanstaande tegenstander hem om de wedstrijd te verliezen.

Kanichiro Yoshimura is een samurai en een echte familieman die zijn vrouw en kinderen niet meer kan voeden vanwege de lage lonen die door zijn kleine dorpsclan worden betaald. Noodgedwongen vertrekt hij, zijn familieleden achterlatend, om in de grote stad meer te verdienen bij een grotere clan.

Seibei Iguchi is een arme samurai die na het overlijden van zijn vrouw in z'n ééntje voor zijn twee dochters en seniele moeder moet zorgen. Op een dag komt hij de mooie Tomoe, met wie hij is opgegroeid, tegen, die op de vlucht is voor haar ex-man, een samurai met veel aanzien.

Een groep idealistische jonge mannen, wiens baas is ontvoerd omdat deze vastberaden is om de corruptie uit te bannen uit hun stad, ontmoet een knorrige en cynische samoerai die totaal niet voldoet aan het beeld dat zij hebben van een samoerai.

Losstaande film van de Rurouni Kenshin (samurai X) serie. Himura Kenshin is getuige van een straatgevecht waarin een man (Shigure) en z'n vrouwelijke metgezel (Toki) aangevallen worden door een groep vreemdelingen. Uiteraard wordt dit gevecht gewonnen en Himura trekt verder met hen op. Later blijkt echter dat Himura een geheim met zich meedraagt uit het verleden wat betrekking heeft op Shigure en Toki.

Mitsumura is een laag geklasseerde samoerai. Zijn taak is het voorproeven van de maaltijden van de daimyo. Zo raakt hij vergiftigd en verliest hij voor altijd zijn zicht.

Een Ronin poogt te overleven tijdens turbulente tijden in Japan in de negentiende eeuw. De transitie van het feodalisme naar een modernere maatschappij gaat vaak gepaard met geweld. Een vrouw afkomstig van een boerenfamilie, die in hetzelfde dorpje woont als de samoerai kruist zijn pad.

Een groep moordenaars staat op het punt de leider van de Ii-clan te vermoorden. Deze heeft een hoge functie in de Tokugawa regering die Japan al 300 jaar bestuurt. De moordenaars denken dat er een verrader in hun midden is en zij verdenken Niiro, een arme ronin die ervan droomt een samurai te worden.

Om zijn krijgers voor te bereiden op mogelijke aanvallen van buitenlandse indringers, organiseert de hanshu een marathon. De marathon volgt ongeveer 58 kilometer een bergpad. Reservisten doen mee aan de marathon en krijgen een prijs aangeboden. Ondertussen wordt de marathon door de centrale regering van Edo ten onrechte als een daad van verraad beschouwd. De moordenaars worden naar Hanshu Palace gestuurd. Jinnai Karasawa (Takeru Satoh) verschijnt als een normale samoerai, maar hij is eigenlijk een spion voor de centrale overheid. Hij realiseert zich dat er moordenaars naar het Hanshu-paleis worden gestuurd. Om de moordenaars tegen te houden en het misverstand uit de wereld te helpen, gaat Jinnai Karasawa wanhopig op de vlucht.

In de negentiende eeuw, wanneer de laatste gevechten tussen de samurai en de shoguns gevochten worden, keren twee vrienden terug naar hun geboortedorp om daar hun familieleven weer op te nemen.

Saheji, een man uit de stad, komt vast te zitten in een eersteklas bordeel als hij de rekening niet kan betalen. Hij maakt het beste van zijn situatie door verschillende taken uit te voeren te midden van het tumult van het einde van het shogunaat – maar altijd door ervoor te zorgen dat hij een ‘commissie’ krijgt voor zijn problemen.

Ten years have passed since the end of Bakumatsu, an era of war that saw the uprising of citizens against the Tokugawa shogunate. The revolutionaries wanted to create a time of peace, and a thriving country free from oppression. The new age of Meiji has come, but peace has not yet been achieved. Swords are banned but people are still murdered in the streets. Orphans of war veterans are left with nowhere to go, while the government seems content to just line their pockets with money.

We follow a youth named Nio who is an honest and kind soul who's considerate of his family, yet he also has a hidden burning passion for seeking justice. From the time he came across Toshizou Hijikata and Souji Okita, members from a group of hated ronin known as the Miburo, his life then takes a turn to a bluer, and clearer path. Nio, alongside the other men whose hearts burn bravely and true, step forth towards an honest path with their blue wills adorned on their hearts!

Yukimura Chizuru is the daughter of a doctor who works in Edo; her father leaves Edo to work as a volunteer doctor and moves to Kyoto without his daughter. As time passes by, Chizuru starts worrying about losing contact with her father, so she decides to go to Kyoto in search of him. On the way, Chizuru is attacked by few criminals and witnesses a fight between an oni and the Shinsengumi. Taking her into custody and saving her, the Shinsengumi debate on what to do with Chizuru when they discover that she is the daughter of the doctor they are also looking for. So they decide to become Chizuru's protectors and help her look for her father (the doctor). Lots of events happen while she stays with the Shinsengumi, as they discover mysterious secrets and also fight against the Bakumatsu group.

Manji is a crass, violent samurai with a special ability: he cannot die. Cursed with immortality by the nun Yobikuni as punishment for his ruthless deeds, he has grown weary of his ageless life. The only way to lift the curse is to slay 1,000 evil men. So Manji wanders Japan, shedding the blood of the wicked on his quest to finally die.

Ryōmaden is the 49th NHK Taiga drama. It was shown on NHK from January 3 to November 28, 2010 spanning 48 episodes. The story centers on the life of 19th-century Japanese historical figures Iwasaki Yatarō and Sakamoto Ryōma. It has been announced that the series will be aired in several other countries, for example Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Yae no Sakura is a 2013 Japanese television series. It is the 52nd NHK taiga drama. The story focuses on Niijima Yae, who is portrayed by Haruka Ayase.

Saigo Takamori, the hero of the Meiji Restoration, was born to a poor, low-ranking samurai family in the Satsuma domain (present day Kagoshima Prefecture). His simple honesty caught the attention of its charismatic feudal lord of Satsuma, Shimazu Nariakira. Nariakira’s assertion that the love of people is what will enrich and strengthen the nation captivated Saigo who took on Nariakira’s secret mission and eventually became a key person for Satsuma. Not a portrait of him survives today and much of his life is a mystery. He is a man who was twice exiled and thrice married. He overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate with exceptional bravery and action. Although he accomplished the restoration, he lost his life in a fight with the new Meiji government.

The 47th NHK Taiga Drama is a life story of Princess Atsu, who was born in Kagoshima Prefecture, then called Satsuma, and became the wife of Tokugawa Iesada, the 13th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. She accedes to the highest rank in Ooku, the inner palace of the Edo castle where women related to the reigning shogun resided. Iesada dies soon after their marriage and Atsuhime assumes the name Tenshoin at the age of 23. She exerts herself for the Tokugawa clan and for the nation during the upheaval in the Meiji Restoration, headed by those from Satsuma.

Set during the Bakumatsu (final years of the Edo period). Sakai Banshiro is a lower-class samurai. Leaving his family behind, he works at the lord’s castle. He consoles and solves worries of the people by making food from recipes sent from his wife.
