De film speelt zich af in twee gescheiden werelden. De eerste is een toekomstige versie van de Aarde waar in november 2012 een gigantisch monster uit de Stille Oceaan opdook en de stad Osaka in Japan aanviel. De andere wereld is de Anteverse, waar het monster vandaan kwam.
Nadat hun vliegtuig crasht, strandt een groepje medewerkers van een olieplatform in het ijskoude Alaska. Ze bevinden zich in het territorium van een groep wolven die hen als indringers zien. Ze zullen nu moeten vechten om te overleven om niet ten prooi te vallen aan de hongerige wolven.
De invloedrijke redactrice Margaret dreigt uitgezet te worden naar haar vaderland Canada. Om dit te voorkomen dwingt ze haar nietsvermoedende en komische assistent Andrew om zich met haar te verloven, terwijl ze hem al jarenlang het leven zuur maakt. Hij gaat akkoord met de verloving maar tegen een paar persoonlijke voorwaarden. Het onwaarschijnlijke stel reist af naar Alaska om de eigenzinnige familie van Andrew te ontmoeten.
Christopher McCandless laat zijn leventje voor wat het is en vertrekt naar de wildernis van Alaska. Zijn kaart van het gebied gooit hij weg, en zijn voedselvoorraad lijkt bij lange na niet voldoende te zijn.
Het meer van Springfield is ongelofelijk vervuild en er moet iets worden gedaan. Iedere bewoner stopt vervolgens met afval in het meer te gooien en het probleem lijkt te zijn opgelost. Maar als Homer Simpson dan de uitwerpselen van zijn net aangeschafte varken in het meer dumpt, gaat alles helemaal mis. Homer en zijn familie weten te ontsnappen en vluchten naar Alaska. Maar daar horen ze dat de regering Springfield geheel van de kaart wil vegen en weten dat ze hun woonplaats moeten zien te redden.
Achtervolgd door een onderzoek van de dienst Interne Zaken over duistere zaken uit zijn verleden, wordt politiedetective Will Dormer naar een klein dorpje in Alaska gestuurd om de moord op een tienermeisje te onderzoeken. De lokale politie kijkt erg tegen hem op, maar door alle zorgen kost het Dormer moeite om naar die verwachtingen op te leven, zeker als hij door de middernachtzon ook nog eens meer en meer aan slapeloosheid gaat lijden.
Het verhaal van de sledehond, Togo, die de serumrun van 1925 leidde, maar door de meesten als te klein en zwak werd beschouwd om zo'n intensieve race te leiden.
Wanneer de tandarts Ted Brooks uit Miami er achter komt dat hij genoemd wordt in een testament reist hij naar Alaska om zijn deel op te halen. Wanneer hij er arriveert blijkt echter dat hij een team sleehonden gekregen heeft. De bergman Thunder Jack wil de honden graag zelf hebben, en hij dringt er bij Ted aan om terug te keren naar een warmer klimaat. Hij besluit echter om te leren om te racen met de honden.
De zwaar bewaakte gedetineerde Manny ontsnapt samen met broekie Buck uit de gevangenis en weet op een goederentrein te stappen. Hun problemen zijn allesbehalve de wereld uit als blijkt dat de trein stuurloos door dendert en de sadistische gevangenisdirecteur Ranken per helikopter nadert.
In het afgelegen dorpje Nome in Alaska verdwijnen al sinds de jaren zestig onwaarschijnlijk veel mensen. Een officiële verklaring hiervoor is nooit gevonden, maar bijna iedereen in het dorpje lijkt wel te weten waar het door komt: alle vermiste personen zijn ontvoerd door buitenaardse wezens. Sommige dorpelingen zijn ontvoerd en keerden hierna terug in Nome. Zij luchten hierover uitgebreid hun hart bij psychiater Abbey Tyler (Milla Jovovich).
Het geïsoleerde stadje Barrow, Alaska, wordt iedere winter 30 dagen lang in volledige duisternis gehuld. Veel inwoners zoeken in die periode hun heil elders. Deze winter vestigt een mysterieuze groep vreemdelingen, vampieren, zich in het stadje. Ze bereiden zich voor om zich gedurende de ononderbroken nacht-van-30-dagen tegoed te doen aan de overgebleven inwoners. De sheriff (Josh Hartnett), zijn vrouw Stella (Melissa George) en een steeds krimpende groep inwoners zullen alles uit de kast moeten halen om te overleven tot het weer licht wordt.
Een eenzame goudzoeker reist af naar Alaska, op zoek naar goud. Hij raakt betrokken bij enkele andere goudzoekers, en wordt verliefd op de mooie Georgia. Hij probeert met zijn charmes haar hart te veroveren.
Balto is een zwervershond die niet bepaald geliefd is. Hij steelt z'n eten en zwerft over de straten. Hij heeft een oogje op Jenna, een vrouwtjeshond waarvan het bazinnetje ernstig ziek is geworden door een ziekteverspreiding. Het medicijn moet vervoerd worden vanaf Nenana, een stad ver van Nome.
Wanneer in Alaska drie kinderen dood worden teruggevonden vermoed men dat er wolven in het spel zijn. Bovendien verdwijnt een zesjarig jongetje waarna diens ouders de hulp inschakelen van de auteur en wolfexpert Russell Core.
Wanneer het amateur-ijshockeyteam van het plaatsje Mystery in Alaska de uitdaging aanneemt om tegen de New York Rangers te spelen, wordt de gehele bevolking gedwongen om hun meningsverschillen aan de kant te zetten. Het kleine dorpje wordt het centrum van een media-circus, aangezien de wedstrijd op de nationale TV wordt uitgezonden.
