Convict Dirk De Vulder, a rapist-murderer Tom arrested, escapes during treatment for knife-wounds in hospital, murdering both police guards. His cell-mate of six years, murderer Benny Stassyns, claims he was unpopular but feared beyond bullying as a former para-commando. Tom blames himself for not having killed Dirk instead of taking him prisoner.
